Names and formulations

  • Breyna: budesonide/formoterol metered-dose inhaler with product-specific instructions

Strength, number of inhalations, and indication differ; follow the prescribed Breyna maintenance regimen and do not infer an acute-relief plan from this label.

Common use

Maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 6 years and older and maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in COPD; U.S. labeling does not designate it for relief of acute bronchospasm.

Mechanism of action

Budesonide suppresses airway inflammation through glucocorticoid activity; formoterol provides long-acting beta2-mediated bronchodilation.

Important adverse effects and monitoring

  • Rinse the mouth after maintenance doses to reduce oropharyngeal candidiasis risk.
  • Monitor symptom control, rescue use, inhaler technique, paradoxical bronchospasm, and systemic corticosteroid effects when exposure is high or prolonged.
  • LABA use without an inhaled corticosteroid increases asthma-related serious-event risk; this combination contains both components.

Patient counseling

  • Use on schedule and keep the prescribed rescue plan available for sudden symptoms.
  • Prime, clean, and track remaining actuations according to the exact inhaler supplied.

Interaction to recognize

With: strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole

Why it matters: May increase systemic budesonide exposure and corticosteroid effects.

Practical response: Avoid prolonged coadministration when possible or monitor for systemic corticosteroid toxicity.
