Reveal the drug learning card

Names and formulations

  • Doxycycline hyclate: generic oral tablet in the bound label

Verify the salt, strength, and dosage form. Administration instructions can differ among doxycycline products.

Common use

Treatment of selected susceptible infections, including certain tick-borne, atypical respiratory, sexually transmitted, and dermatologic infections.

Mechanism of action

Binds the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis; activity is generally bacteriostatic.

Important adverse effects and monitoring

  • Can cause photosensitivity, esophageal irritation/ulceration, intracranial hypertension, and severe skin reactions.
  • Tooth discoloration and effects on bone growth are class concerns during tooth development; specific severe infections may justify use despite age or pregnancy concerns.
  • Monitor clinical response and adverse effects; avoid unnecessary use to reduce resistance.

Patient counseling

  • Take with a full glass of water and remain upright; do not take immediately before bed.
  • Use sun protection and separate from aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, or bismuth products according to product instructions.

Interaction to recognize

With: antacids, iron, calcium, magnesium, or bismuth

Why it matters: Chelation or binding can reduce doxycycline absorption.

Practical response: Separate administration using the interval in the dispensed product labeling or pharmacist instructions.
